What does Monica Jones, a magnetic and determined Black transgender woman, do after she challenges the constitutionality of the Arizona laws limiting her freedom of expression and sexuality? She finds a way to manifest her personhood in largely transphobic society. The forthcoming film MANIFESTING MONICA JONES documents her journey.
Manifesting Monica's Story
Filmmaker PJ Starr has been filming in Arizona with Monica Jones from the moment of her arrest in 2013. As Monica’s journey took her to New York, the United Nations in Geneva and Australia, PJ and her team were on location to document. Completion of the documentary will allow us to support Monica’s dream of social change for the rights transgender women of color, especially those impacted by policies affecting the sex trade.
Manifesting Monica Jones is a forthcoming feature length documentary featuring a compelling human rights activist who stands up against unjust and unconstitutional laws, and transforms her own life in the process. Monica Jones, a Black transgender woman, makes a decision to protest Phoenix-wide arrest sweeps enforced by the police and the university where she is studying for her degree in social work. Immediately after speaking out publicly about this police brutality, she herself was arrested by the sting. The documentary illustrates how transgender people are criminalized for their very existence and the fortitude required to take on these frameworks. In the face of almost overwhelming odds Monica Jones refuses to be defined by the moment of her arrest and propels herself forward, to become a global icon for human rights and the founder of her own organization. The film deploys verité, interviews, animation and news footage covering Monica’s court case, travels and international appearances.
