“Righteous Among Men” is a feature length, biopic based on the true-life story of Italian Cycling champion Gino Bartali. He risked his life as a courier for the Italian resistance during WWII and smuggled forged papers to Italian Jews, giving them Italian names and identifying them as members of the Catholic Church. All Gino Bartali wanted, was to be the Italian Cycling champion, living by the “Golden Rule”. But his destiny would be shaped by a higher power. With the body of an athlete and the heart of a Saint, Gino, alongside the love of his life proved… that just one man can change the world.

My work is driven by the need to challenge pervading ideologies and point to ways that we can be better citizens in a diverse and global society. “Righteous Among Men” takes strong humanistic stances from sociopolitical, psychological and philosophical perspectives. In particular, “Righteous Among Men” deals with the issues of violence and hate that our World has experienced in the past. “Righteous Among Men” highlights this problem by showing characters that reject traditional ideologies to find peace, happiness and a justification of their life’s goals. It is important to me as a filmmaker, that I use this medium with purpose as I strive to tell a compelling story as well as a form of art, intellectual engagement, and entertainment. The appeal of cinema to me lies in its ability to suggest the kind of knowledge that might be said to reside in the soul… whether I follow, observe, deconstruct or altogether dispense with narrative. It is this affection for the ineffable that forms my work more consistently than anything else. By creating situations and breaking the passivity of the spectator, I want the viewer to become part of the story as a kind of an added component. “Righteous Among Men”, is based on inspiring real life situations. By using the live action of my screenplay blended with archival footage of the events that the story is based on… I will attempt to bring the characters to life… and to, ideally, have the audience feel the story.

We are raising funds to enable us to tell a compelling story about a man who reminds us that contemporary events are not new and that humanity has been wrestling with the issues of injustice across the course of our existence.

Anyone with a strong belief in humanity and social justice will be reinforcing that idea by expressing their views with a contribution.
